The Free Money Advice Service has been setup by the government to provide impartial advice on most financial matters but is particularly good on Equity Release.

Equity Release is a minefield but a necessary minefield! Get it right and older people can raise money on their property - potentially allowing them to afford to stay in their homes for the rest of their lives. Get it wrong and they can accumulate an enormous debt and effectively disinherit their children as the finance company claims their home in order to repay the accumulated loan when they die. The link below may help you decide whether this might be a useful route to go down. However just as importantly consider using a financial adviser.
This is a simple AgeUK Equity Release calculator which will help you find out how much an equity release loan would allow you to raise on your house.

Great branch, great staff, always provide legendary service.

This is in a good location apart from parking being a pain at times due to being busy along that road. However the staff are very helpful. It is clean and tidy inside. I believe that they have made alot of changes so you are not queuing for ages.

Lloyds Bank

Nice place :)

HSBC Bank

22 Abington St, Northampton NN1 2AJ, UK – 0345 740 4404

A bank as major as HSBC and they only have 2 counters? Spent nearly 15 minutes in a line today. Unimpressed and will avoid making any transactions with them in the future. Other banks have long queues too, but they also have a minimum of 3 to 4 counters running with efficient staff attending to matters as quick but as percise. Pick it up HSBC.

Nice and helpful staff

NatWest

41 Drapery, Northampton NN1 2EY, UK – 0345 788 8444

I have banked with NatWest for fifty years. In recent years I have witnesses a steadily deteriorating level of service within the branches. The Drapery branch is no exception. The most recent refurbishment, in which the traditional tills were removed, is a customer service disaster. The new arrangement allows for absolutely no privacy and the fact that staff are often oblivious to this fact exacerbates the problem. There appears to be no consistent management of the ever longer queues, with people being taken out of the queue and given service ahead of those who were there before them. I recently observed a cashier handing a large sum of money to a customer with absolutely no exercise of discretion. It is hardly surprising that we hear news reports of people being mugged as they leave bank branches after withdrawing cash. Under the traditional till arrangement, the transaction would have taken place within the teller's domain on the other side of the screen, witnessed only by the customer. The cash would have been delivered to the customer in an envelope. Most people now understand that banks do not want customers using branches. Branches are expensive and they want to close as many as possible in order to maximise their profits. However, whilst the majority of transactions can be carried out online, there will always be a need for branches. The fact that technology has changed the face of banking is no reason for banks to assume that they can now provide the public with the dregs of a service provision at their branches.

Great bank but needs to be open longer at the weekends. How do they expect us to be able to get there when most people work the hours they are open?

Coventry Building Society Northampton

Building Societies

Nationwide

8 Drapery, Northampton NN1 2HG, UK – 0800 554 0454

Nice interior design, and I adore how Nationwide have kept the exterior looking natural. When I've needed to do anything with my banking, there has not been a fault. The staff have been very helpful and when I was waiting in a queue, one of the members of staff came to see if they could assist me, instead of continuing to wait in the queue.

Historical building converted into large cash machine with slow operations and the two machines to the right of the entrance are prone to breaking down

Mortgage Brokers

Grange Mortgage & Protection Services Ltd

6, Basset Court, Loake Cl, Northampton NN4 5EZ, UK – 01604 877999

Best broker I've ever dealt with. Vijay has been extremely helpful and kept us up to date. He helped us to find best deal possible and responded promptly to our emails even over weekend or evenings. Will definitely use Vijay when it comes to re mortgaging or searching new mortgage. Can't recommend enough!

Having dealt with a few brokers in my time, I have to say that the service that Grange Mortgages offers is second to none. Often it is unavoidable when lenders are slow but Grange kept me up to date with the progress of my application, both with good news and when there were delays. The most important part was that they offered explanations and guided me through what was a very emotive time. I'd like to thank all the advisors and the administrators for their thorough service and for the way we were treated as individuals. Nothing was too much trouble regardless of who you spoke to. I would most certainly recommend them to anyone.
